My Dell desktop running Linux does the same thing. It sits there at
idle as I edit my Java programs. As soon as I type 'make' to compile
them or 'run' to test them, the CPU kicks in at full speed and the fan
comes on after a few seconds. Maybe it's a "Java" thing. (nothing to do
with Perl, of course :)
