Things start making sense to me. Perhaps the OP has "huge" files (define
huge by saying sizeof(huge)>(quotaleft/2)) and his script creates temp
files _because_ text files usually cannot be edited inplace? He didn't
show any real code, though, and neither did he mention how big the files
he works with are, nor which space is left by quota.
To OP: Boil down your script to a minimal exposing the problematic behaviour
and note which files cause the hiccups, and compare to your quota and your
diskspace left. There is even a Perl module providing this information.
