Your knowledge is outdated. According to the GD FAQ, GIF support was
restored in version 2.0.38, released July 2004.

Yep, you're right, but no clue about how to configure gd to support
GIF:

To assign environment variables (e.g., CC, CFLAGS...), specify them as

By default, `make install' will install all the files in

for instance `--prefix=$HOME'.
For better control, use the options below.
