But -- any of you -- can you please make it *stop saying that*?

You could make it stop saying that if you stopped trying to install it.

If you want advice that's actually *helpful*, perhaps you should
consider posting something helpful in the first place.  Whinging about
"it doesn't work" with no details is pretty useless.

I *have* had problems upgrading CPAN, but in 99% of those cases the
problem was PEBKAC.  I suspect similar issues in your situation.

It's *never* worked, Keith. The details of attempts to upgrade CPAN in
1998 somehow escape me. I must not be taking enough vitamin B complex,
or maybe it's the occasional whiffs of someone driving past smoking
weed that have built up over ten years that have so irreparably
damaged my memories. I have, after all, strolled through both the
Haight and Berkeley. Otherwise, who knows. Maybe old age has driven me
to the horrible state of memory that causes me to totally space at
least twenty different instances of multiple pages of details before
"won't install without force" or worse over the course off a decade.
You are totally right. I can't believe I'm so lax as to have forgotten
all that. There must be something wrong with me. Go figure.

However, when the script says "do this and this and everything will be
fine" and, over twenty times, doing that and that results in a failure
to update consistently over the course of ten years, and when other
people commiserate that they have the same thing happen (and they
have) repeatedly, then it seems to me more like PEBMAD -- Problem
Exists Between Maintainer and Distribution.

By the way, I'm wondering something -- and feel free to tell me to
screw off is this is too personal: Have you ever watched Stargate:
Atlantis? If so, do you remember the occasionally recurring character
Dr. Peter Kavanagh? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tau
%27ri_characters_in_Stargate_Atlantis#Dr._Kavanagh) Reason I ask is
because the way you come across all superior and snotty and self-
righteous, it's him I'm picturing on the other end of usenet, here.
Granted, in the show the character is a completely self-absorbed whiny
little (albeit tall) crapheap. I'm not saying you are, of course. But
just because I don't say it doesn't mean I don't think it.
