I still install nearly all modules using pretty much the same method
as you've just outlined above.
There is supposed to be a way to install prior versions via CPAN - I see references around the net but no instructions in the CPAN.org FAQ's or anywhere else. I find myself more and more relying on the 'manual' process. Somehow I feel more in control (or less out-of-control).
