mysql driver problem? (slightly off topic)

Hi all, this is slightly off topic but I'm sure someone here has come across this problem. I cannot connect to mysql on my redhat 9 box.
I ran: shell> perl -MCPAN -e 'install Bundle::DBD::mysql';
and it did say that there was a problem but all I've manged to find out from google is that there maybe some c libraries missing. I don't know where to start with this, I've tried everything I can think of.
Any ideas anyone?
