You are trying to use a feature that is in perl-5.10 and not in your
installed version of perl 5.8.8.

If you want switch functionality then you might want to install the
Switch cpan module from which you will be able to

use Switch;

switch ($val) {
case 1 { print "number 1" }
case "a" { print "string a" }
}

or upgrade to perl-5.10

Omg, so careless am I, I thought 5.8.8 is later than 5.10 , because I interpret 5.10 as 5.1 , as in floating number the zero after the dot does not give significant value.But I forgot it's version number not floating number, lol, Thanks
