I would start by building your own perl from source. OS vendor
delivered perls tend to be pretty broken, especially when it comes to
adding modules that require compilation.
If you build your own tree, no matter which compiler you use, you will
have far fewer problems, and it will be easier for others to help. It
not that hard hard. You can do it in several hours (if you
interactively answer all the questions). If you do what most of us do,
and specific all the crucial answers on the command line of the
configure script, it will probably take less than an hour, soup to nuts.
A side benefit is that you will be able to build a version of perl that
is less antique. I would recommend 5.8.2 at least, especially if you
plan to support Unicode (support for which is in the works).
I will admit that I have not yet tried solaris 9, but I would be
surprized if it were a problem, if you build perl from scratch.
