DBD::Mysql.pm error w/ 4.1.7

    I've been googling for 1/2 hr., sorry if I've missed the answer.

    System: winNT 2kpro,
            mysql 4.1.7 fresh install
    perl, v5.8.4 built for MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
    (with 3 registered patches, see perl -V for more detail)
    Copyright 1987-2004, Larry Wall
    Binary build 810 provided by ActiveState Corp. http://www.ActiveState.com

    DBI 1.45: up to date.
    DBD-mysql 2.9003: up to date.

    Created user using Grant option.
    DBI connect('cjuhsdinfo','{username}',...) failed: Client does not support
    authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL
    client at ...

    2 questions.
    - Is there a fix
    - If not, how far back do I have to go to get a working combination of
    mysql and DBI/DBD.
