JL: Agreed. The build should not be done as root. I don't install as root
either, but that's not necessarily a good idea.

That is explicitly unrecommended in current versions of GCC - I would not
advise doing it.
For GCC 4.0.0, you need to have nearly 2 GB spare disk space available under
the build area. You need about 650 MB for the installed software.
In other words, your key problem may have been trying to be fancy and
