Just FYI, Joel Spolsky is going to be the featured speaker at a web
seminar on December 2 which will also include a presentation by John
Ousterhout. I've attached the invite. I presume that anyone can
register and view the seminar.

> Subject: Joel Spolsky on Social Interfaces--An invitation
> from the Editor in Chief

> Dear Software Development Reader,
>
> On the traditional usability front, we're all familiar with failure
> stories. Recently, an article in the New York Times described the
> travails of the San Jose, California police department with its new
> mobile dispatch system that includes a Windows-based touch-screen
> computer in every patrol car. Older officers who've never used
> desktop computers struggle with the menu-based interface,
> complaining that the complex system is jeopardizing their safety.
>
> Popular blogger, author and entrepreneur Joel Spolsky says there's a
> distinction between usability and social interface design. Indeed,
> XML Pioneer Adam Bosworth recently mentioned how, when he spoke to
> users back in 1997 about what should go into Internet Explorer 5,
> customers said they didn't want rich GUIs. Apparently, training and
> support costs for Web-based applications were much lower than for
> custom Windows apps.
>
> Join me on Thursday, December 2, 2004, as Spolsky illustrates the
> importance of interfaces with examples from online community
> applications and his recent work at Fog Creek Software. His thoughts
> on social interface and community design, I hope, will give us
> insight into the art of creating software that encourages successful
> human-to-human interaction.
>
> After the interview, stay tuned for our sponsor presentation, in
> which Electric Cloud customer Intuit describes how they improved
> productivity and quality through fast builds. Jon Burt, manager of
> the SCM team for Intuit's established QuickBooks product, describes
> how the QuickBooks developers' agile focus became a reality, enabled
> by novel technology to power a continuous build environment.
>
> Also, John Ousterhout, CEO and founder of Electric Cloud and the
> inventor of the Tcl scripting language, describes how cutting-edge
> ISVs can harness cluster computing to improve the software
> development process.
