sha1 to take fingerprints on large files

I've been browsing Tcllib amd found Don Libes' sha1 package.
It is easy to understand using it with strings. However I wuould like
to take fingerprints of files of sseveral megabytes. How can his task
may be acoomplished withow reading the entire file into memory ?
Perhaps somebody had to undertake this problem and can provide me with
sych a tip, TIA, Carlos
