Adding new directories to auto_path when installing from source

I'm attempting to install tcl 8.4.9 from source on debian linux. I
would like to know whether it is possible to specify additional
directories to the auto_path variable during compilation? On my Mac os
x, the default tcl install has additional directories like
~/Library/Tcl for example.
