Re: Most of the links on TCL FAQ dead!

Technically, on the page you list, I've found only a few that do not
work - the tcl on windows faq , the incr tcl faq, the perl/tk faq
appear to be stale.

However, I agree that _under_ the top level links, many of the
underlying links are stale.

Given that a few of the files on the above page belong to me, I can
comment on the state of my links.

I have tried over the years to encourage people to work with me to keep
the links updated. I get perhaps 1 link update a month. I myself try
to update links on a regular basis, but with work, and personal issue
(family, health, aging, etc.), I'm not able to do as much as I could
when I was a young member of the community.

I proposed moving all these to a Wiki, and having the community update
them as they found them. I got about 20 percent moved and was asked to
stop while alternatives were considered.

I know of at least 2 or 3 other people who have tried parallel attempts
to build and maintain a link repository. They too have run into the
problem of not getting enough assistance to keep things up to date.
For instance, www.tcl.tk has been seeking web site maintenance help for
years, and still, as far as I am aware, is looking.

So, would it be better to have no resources, or resources which can,
with some effort by the seeker, result in some hits?
I myself vote for the later. Just today I received a request from a
tcl developer asking if I knew where he could find a particular tcl
program from the 90s. I was able to locate it in the FAQs, checked and
found that the url was still valid, and I emailed it to the developer.
The developer found that the older program needed only a single
modification to work on win2000 machines. I asked him to post a note
on wiki.tcl.tk noting the change... we'll see if that happens.

Anyways, just wanted you to know that you are right. People keep
changing web hosts, moving from school to work, etc. and forget to send
us an internet 'change of address'. If you find a link that doesn't
work, and can find the correct url, send a note along and if my health
allows, I can update some of the pages.
