Re: Ann Getleft 1.2a1

Hi,

Getleft is a web site grabber written in Tcl/Tk, given an URL
it will download the whole site or, at least, the part of it

The main change since the last version is that I now use the
Tile extension for the user interface. Many thanks to Joe
English for his work and for answering my question in the
newsgroup.

Also, thanks to Tile, I have been able to port Getleft to
MacOS X.

Dear Andres,

Bravo! Getleft works well, and looks *beautiful* on OS X. You have done fantastic work in packaging this for the Mac. Many cross-platform deployments of Tcl/Tk applications on OS X don't get the little details right, like putting the application name in the "Apple" menu. Getleft 1.2a1 not only works well and looks nice, but it feels like a Mac application. Well done.

For what it's worth, I'm saying this as someone who has used Getleft in the past, and used it as a model for a clean, well-designed Tcl/Tk application, and thought, "It would be nice if there were a Mac-specific package of this." So I'm especially pleased with this new version.

Can I suggest that you bundle Tile with the application rather than asking the end user to install it separately? It's very easy to do: just create a "lib" subdirectory in the "Contents" folder of the application bundle, at the same level as "MacOS" and "Resources." Then put Tile there. Tile 0.6 is included in Daniel Steffen's most recent Tk Aqua distribution, and the latest version (0.7.2) has a downloadable starkit that includes a Mac build of the library: just unwrap it and bundle appropriately. I bundle all my applications in this fashion, so that end users don't have to install anything but the app (most non-Tcl developers wouldn't know how to install Tile).

Thanks again for your great work!
