How to get an icon into the Gnome notification area?

Hi!
I'm looking for a how-to or an example here. I've failed with Google
and the wiki, so I'm hoping someone here can help.
I want to write a Tcl app(let?) which will run a regular check on a
database, and report the result by showing and changing an icon in
the Gnome notification panel. I'm running FC4 in case it matters. I'd
also like to associate a menu with the icon.
I can find plenty of examples in GTK and some in perl, but in tcl I've
drawn a blank. Is there a package that will help with this?
(I did find tkbiff, but it seems to do everything except icons...)
TIA
John
