Hi all,.
Im completely new to writing scripts. If my question
sounds silly.forgive me.Give me an idea on this.
I need to write a test script, which will automate the testing of
printer commands(specific to a POS printer). Is it possible to use tcl
to do this without GUI. If without GUI, how can I send command to the
printer(to serial/parallel/USB) port of the printer. Some commands will
have response from the printer. How can I read that response.
My aim is to automate the printer command testing through scripts,
will any other scripts will be more efficient.

We have a lot of affection hereabouts for automation;
you're among friends.
To get the best help from us, you'll do well to supply
a few more details. When in doubt, start by addressing
us as you would an ignorant manager, withOUT technical
specifics likely to be involved in implementation:
When the project finishes, how will it look? Will it
have one computer connected to one printer? Will it
be a deployment (as seems more likely to me) of hundreds
of computers, each one direct-connected to exactly one
printer? Are the computers all running the same operating
system? Is that operating system Windows? What does
"printer command" mean to you: is it the abstract, "when
I push *here* on the screen, a receipt comes out *there*",
or the more low-level "COPY $SOME_FILE PRN:", or something
in-between?
What does automation mean to you, or, perhaps more aptly,
what are the possible results of a test? Is the point to
exercise a command, say, and confirm there was no error
response, or do you have in mind to launch a particular
test and validate that ink shows up on the right spots on
the paper?
Who controls the software involved in printing? Do you
have source?
Tcl might well play a prominent role in what you want. I
suspect there's more analysis of requirements involved
than you realize.
