I think it's too late. We're ceasing support for 8.4, which has been
out for *ages* now, and I guess the behaviour change in question was
part of TIP#17, itself a rather early 8.4 feature-add. (Source diving
is unlikely to help; that code has been forked over rather thoroughly
many times to try to speed it up.)

If you'd noticed 5 years ago, you might have got a different
response. ;-)
