simple question -string manipulation

Hi,

I'm new with tcl.
I'm getting input that look like <string><number> and I want to find
the string part. how can I do it?
In other case I'm getting input that includes the following inside it
"_<" ">" (can be in any place in the input) and I want to remove the
part between "_<" and ">". how can I do it?
